SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE RACE

13th Lost In Kainuu Adventure Race (Finland) 7-9 September 2023 is an exciting adventure race around the magical wilderness and greatest landscapes of Kuhmo area located in Kainuu region and Northern Finland. This adventure race gathers annually about 500-700 adventure racers (amateurs to top athletes) to survive this ultimate challenge of physical and mental endurance!

In the Lost In Kainuu Adventure Race you enjoy hard, versatile and challenging endurance experience with different kinds of disciplines like MTB-bikingrunningtrekkingorienteering, canoeing (not in all categories), swimming (and some other water related tasks) and upsailing/climbing/zipline only some to mention.

In addition we have large amount of good quality adventure quests and tasks for you to enjoy! In this adventure race you can surely challenge yourself and your team mates physically and mentally!

You can join into this adventure race if you have basic orienteering and swimming skills and you are at least 18-years-old with the quite good endurance condition. In to the Almost Lost and Casually Lost categories also 15-17-years-old youths are allowed to participate with the parent/custodian approval. To participate in this adventure race does not require any special skills (for ex. rope climbing skills). Rope training will be available before the start at the competition area.

This year, “Lost in Kainuu” is participating in the Adventure1 series for the first time, and in Kuhmo, Finland, the Finnish Championship for the 24-hour Extremely Lost category (for women, men, and mixed teams) will be held on September 8-9. All teams in the Extremely Lost category are automatically entered into the Finnish Championship. The competition will adhere to the rules of the “Lost in Kainuu” adventure sports competition.

Adventure 1 (A1) is an international series of top-tier adventure racing competitions held across Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. The series website is https://adventure1series.com/national-champs/.

CATEGORIES, DISTANCES, DISCIPLINES, SERVICE AND CAMPING AREA 

 

EXTREMELY LOST 24 H (Friday-Saturday)

  • Duration: 24 h continuous race
    • Estimated duration for the winner team: 24 hours
    • Maximum time to use: 32 h 30 minutes
    • Continuous race, no mandatory breaks and teams can plan a race timetable as they like.
  • Length: 225 km
    • MTB (different size of paths and trails): about 50 km
    • Biking (roads and bigger paths): about 100 km
    • Running/trekking/orienteering: 45 km
    • Canoeing: 30 km (organizer reserves 1 piece of open canoe per team, so 3 team members/canoe)
    • Adventure Quests: are included in the disciplines earlier mentioned
      • Adventure Quests: challenge the team’s physical and mental abilities and team spirit
        • Water related quests: usually swimming or some other water related tasks
    • Notice! Distances of these disciplines can be changed if the route plans are changing due the nature or some other reasons
  • Team: 3 person/team
  • Categories: men/women/mixed
  • Competition days: Friday-Saturday
  • Maximum amount of teams: 50 teams
  • Bikes:
    • We strongly recommend MTB-bikes/fatbikes for the teams
    • Team can reserve MTB-bikes/fatbikes from the registration service (additional cost xx € / day / bike)
  • Tracks and routes:
    • During the Extremely Lost category men and mixed teams are competing on the same route. Women´s route is a little bit shorter with some different control points. Cut-off points will be used on the route. The slower teams will be guided through shortcuts; the way that all the teams will finish with a reasonable time difference.
  • Swim mattress: not needed in 2023
  • Canoe (open canoe): Organizer has reserved one (1) canoe with paddles and life jackets for the every team. Team cannot use own canoe, paddles or life jackets in canoeing part.
  • Service and camping area
    • Mandatory time when team must use the service and camping area:
      • For every team, we have reserved one camping spot (4 m x 4 m) from our service and camping area. During the competition from friday 8th Sep at 8.00 am to Saturday 9th Sep at 7.00 pm teams must use only this service and camping area spot for the accommodation/service/equipment storage and so on. The team are not allowed to accommodate or do service/maintenance somewhere else in the area. Only the places what organisers will allow in advance are allowed during the race. In the team´s camping spot (at the service and camping area) team can use shelter (for ex. Tent, lean etc) for the equipment and for themselves.
      • In the service and camping area we have all the necessary basic services like running water, toilets, etc.
    • Optional time when team can use the service and camping area:
      • Every team’s camping spot is open for the teams as a camping area also before and after the adventure race between thursday 7th Sep at 3.00 pm to Sunday 10th Sep at 12.00 am. Camping spot is included in the participation fee.
    • Notice! Caravan vans and vehicles are forbidden to use in the service and camping area.
    • Service and camping area is located adjacent to the competition centre
  • Equipment transport (team member’s drop bags)
    • One (1) equipment transport is included (equipment transport size is 60 litres and 15 kg / team member). All service material during the race must be mounted and used in the team tent place area in the competition centre’s service and camping area.
  • Soup meals during the race and after the race (included in the participation fee)
    • Soup meal 1: 1/2 part of the race: served on Friday 8th Sep at 06.00-12.00 pm.
    • Soup meal 2: After finish line: served on Saturday 9th Sep at 10.00 am – 7.00 pm.

LOST 16-18 H (Friday-Saturday)

  • Duration: 16-18 h race with mandatory night break (about 10.00 pm – 6.00 am)
    • Estimated duration for the winner team: 15 hours
    • Maximum time to use: 24 h 30 minutes
    • Mandatory night break is at the service and camping area’s team tent area (in the competition centre)
  • Length: 175 km
    • MTB (different size of paths and trails): about 40 km
    • Biking (roads and bigger paths): about 100 km
    • Running/trekking/orienteering: 30 km
    • Canoeing: 5 km (organizer reserves 1 piece of open canoe per team, so 2 team members/canoe)
    • Adventure Quests: are included in the disciplines earlier mentioned
      • Adventure Quests: challenge the team’s physical and mental abilities and team spirit
        • Water related quests: usually swimming or some other water related tasks
    • Notice! Distances of these disciplines can be changed if the route plans are changing due the nature or some other reasons
  • Team: 2 person/team
  • Categories: men/women/mixed
  • Competition days: Friday-Saturday
  • Maximum amount of teams: 100 teams
  • Bikes:

    • Soup meal: served on Friday 8th Sep at 06.00-12.00 pm.
    • Breakfast: served on Saturday 10th at 04.00-06.00 am.
    • Soup meal: After finish line: served on Saturday 10th Sep at 10.00 am – 7.00 pm.

ALMOST LOST 6-8 H (Saturday)

  • Duration: 6-8 h day race
    • Estimated duration for the winner team: 6 hours
    • Maximum time to use: 10 h 30 minutes
  • Length: 75 km
    • MTB (different size of paths and trails): about 20 km
    • Biking (roads and bigger paths): about 40 km
    • Running/trekking/orienteering: 10 km
    • Canoeing: 5 km (organizer reserves 1 piece of open canoe per team, so 2 team members/canoe)
    • Adventure Quests: are included in the disciplines earlier mentioned
      • Adventure Quests: challenge the team’s physical and mental abilities and team spirit
        • Water related quests: usually swimming or some other water related tasks
    • Notice! Distances of these disciplines can be changed if the route plans are changing due the nature or some other reasons
  • Team: 2 person/team
  • Categories: open (overall prizes are distributed for open category’s best 3 teams; results are made for men, women and mixed)
  • Competition days: Saturday
  • Maximum amount of teams: 100 teams
  • Bikes:
    • We strongly recommend MTB-bikes/fatbikes for the teams
    • Team can reserve MTB-bikes/fatbikes from the registration service (additional cost xx € / day / bike)
  • Tracks and routes:
    • All the teams are competing on the same route. Cut-off points will be used on the route. The slower teams will be guided through shortcuts; the way that all the teams will finish with reasonable time difference. The Almost Lost category is a one-day adventure, organized on Saturday.

      • Adventure Quests: challenge the team’s physical and mental abilities and team spirit
        • Water related quests: usually swimming or some other water related tasks
    • Notice! Distances of these disciplines can be changed if the route plans are changing due the nature or some other reasons
  • Team: 2-5 person/team
  • Categories: open
  • Competition days: Saturday
  • Maximum amount of teams: 50 teams

SERVICE AND SERVICE STATIONS DURING THE RACE

Every team has to carry all their equipment and service bags (food, re-hydration drinks, power bars etc.) with them during the whole adventure and/or storage them in the team tent area at the service and camping area in the competition centre. There will be 3 – 4 water stations for the teams on each day. Water stations are marked on to the route maps. In our adventure, we don´t allow any other service for the teams from outside (for example service team or other helpers) than our organizers own services.

STARTING TIMES (MASS STARTS)

Extremely Lost and Lost -categories mass start is on Friday at 10.00 am.

Almost Lost and Casually Lost -categories mass start is on Saturday at 8.00 am.

The finish will be closed on Saturday at 6.30 pm.

GPS-TRACKING

All the teams will have the GPS-tracking devices and instructions from the organizers. The audience and organizers can follow the teams in internet www.gpsseuranta.net. The tracking can be seen afterwards as well, and it is shown during the prize-giving ceremony.
